Cyril Girot

CEO – CAMBODIA AIRPORTS (VINCI Airports’ subsidiary in Cambodia)

Can you provide an overview of VINCI Airports and its role in the country’s aviation sector?

VINCI Airports is the leading private airport operator globally, managing over 70 airports worldwide in 14 countries. Depending on the assets, we operate, finance, develop, and maintain these airports under a B-O-T concession agreement.

We’ve been involved in Cambodia under the name of Cambodia Airports since 1995, starting with Phnom Penh International Airport, followed by Siem Reap, and finally, Sihanoukville. We’ve invested around $1 billion in Cambodia, substantially enhancing its aviation infrastructure and increasing traffic since our arrival.

What key steps has Cambodia Airports taken to support tourism recovery after the pandemic?

The pandemic hit global aviation hard, but since 2022, we’ve seen progressive recovery, with some routes exceeding 2019 traffic levels at Phnom Penh Airport. For example, South Korea is performing 52% above pre-pandemic numbers. There is optimism about the future, especially with the ongoing rebuilding of our network and the gradual return of Chinese tourists.

We’re very excited about new developments. Cambodia now has a new airline with a solid foundation, Air Asia Cambodia, which started operations in May with both domestic and international routes. We’ve also expanded connectivity by reopening routes to Qatar and Dubai, major global hubs. Additionally, we have direct flights to Delhi since June, tapping into India’s growing market for both business and leisure travel. We’ve also increased our flight frequency from Hong Kong, moving to daily flights by October. These new routes and airlines connecting to some of the world’s busiest airport hubs are essential for boosting tourism and business travel to Cambodia.

Infrastructure development is key to supporting growth. Can you share details on current projects?

One major project is the new Phnom Penh airport, where we’ve been appointed as the operator. In Sihanoukville, we have been expanding infrastructure, including extending the runway, adding new aircraft stands, and building new arrival and VIP terminals. These efforts are vital for accommodating future traffic and enhancing the overall travel experience.

The Cambodian Tourism Board is a recent initiative. How do you see its role in promoting tourism?

The Cambodian Tourism Board is a crucial development. Cambodia has incredible attractions—ancient temples, beautiful beaches, and islands—yet many need international exposure. The board will help market the country abroad and enhance its profile and showcasing Cambodia’s unique offerings to tourists from around the world.

How is Cambodia Airports addressing environmental concerns?

Sustainability is a priority for all airports within the VINCI Airports’ network. Last year, we earned Level 3 of the ACA Carbon Accreditation for Phnom Penh, and just recently, Sihanoukville International Airport reached the same level. We focus on waste management and have an inclusive program that involves local scavengers in waste segregation efforts. This initiative is unique to Cambodia and demonstrates our commitment to environmental and social responsibility.

What is your approach to technological innovation?

Within VINCI Airports’ network, we’ve introduced many technological innovations, including, for instance, self-service kiosks for easier check-in biometric technology, which we’re using at our innovation centre in Lyon Airport, France. This facial recognition system streamlines the entire airport experience, from check-in to boarding. We’re looking forward to expanding this system to Cambodia in the future.
