FOUNDER AND CEO – CONFIREL

Can you tell us about the origins of Confirel and your vision for the company?

Confirel was founded with the vision of creating sustainable, high-quality products that showcase the best of Cambodia’s natural resources, particularly its rich agricultural heritage. I have always had a deep connection to the land and its potential. As Cambodia began to recover from years of hardship, it became clear to me that our agricultural traditions, while strong, needed innovation to meet international standards.

Our mission has always been twofold: to produce high-quality products that can compete globally while empowering farmers and local communities. We are deeply committed to sustainability and believe in working closely with farmers, not only as buyers, but also as partners. We provide them with fair wages, training, and the tools they need to improve their livelihoods. We started with palm sugar, which is an integral part of Cambodian culture, and have since expanded to include a variety of other products, such as Kampot pepper , medicinal plants, and natural health products.

What prompted you to create Confirel and what role did your personal journey play?

Confirel ’s mission . Growing up in Cambodia, I saw firsthand the beauty and potential of the country’s agriculture. After the difficult years following the Khmer Rouge regime, much of this potential had been forgotten, but I knew it could be revived. I then studied phytotherapy in France, where I developed a passion for natural remedies and learned how traditional agricultural practices could be combined with modern science to create innovative products.

Back in Cambodia, I wanted to give back to my country. Confirel became a way to contribute not only to Cambodia’s economic growth, but also to the well-being of its people. The focus has always been on finding a balance between modern methods and our traditional agricultural roots. My goal has been to create products that embody Cambodia’s rich natural and cultural heritage, while meeting international standards.

How has Confirel evolved from its beginnings to today?

When we started, we were a small company with a clear goal. Our first breakthrough product was palm sugar, a staple in Cambodian cuisine. We transformed it from a local product to a premium product for export. We were able to showcase the health benefits of palm sugar as a natural sweetener and position it as a healthier alternative to refined sugar in the global market.

As the business has grown, we have expanded our range into other areas including Kampot pepper, ginger extracts, black ginger and herbal teas from Cambodia’s rich biodiversity . Each of these products is rooted in the idea of sustainability and ethical production. For example, Kampot pepper has gained international recognition and we have worked closely with farmers to ensure that this product meets the highest quality standards whilst preserving the traditional growing methods that make it unique.

Today, Confirel is known for its commitment to sustainable and circular development, not only in terms of environmental impact, but also in the way we treat our partners and employees. We employ hundreds of workers and collaborate with many farming communities, providing them with fair wages and resources to improve their standard of living. Our products are now sold internationally and we have received certifications for organic and fair trade practices, which are essential for our future growth.

How did the company manage to innovate and grow despite the challenges in Cambodia?

Innovation has always been at the heart of our business. One of the key drivers of our success is our ability to innovate quickly and anticipate market trends. For example, we launched a fast-acting pain-relieving health product five years before a similar product was marketed in France. This type of innovation has allowed us to expand our presence in global markets, particularly in French-speaking Africa, where our products have been well received.

However, our country still lags behind other countries in the region, such as Thailand and Vietnam, in terms of infrastructure and government support. This leads to higher production costs and more difficult access to new markets. But we have learned to adapt. By focusing on quality and creating unique, premium products, we have been able to differentiate ourselves from our competitors.

One of our strategies is to highlight the natural and health benefits of our products. We market palm sugar as a healthier alternative to refined sugar and our Kampot pepper as one of the best spices in the world. We have also put a lot of effort into sustainability and fair trade practices, which resonate strongly with international consumers.

What message do you have for investors interested in Cambodia?

Cambodia is a country with untapped potential, especially in agriculture. Confirel’s journey shows that success is possible with a clear vision and a commitment to quality and sustainability. Cambodia has a lot to offer the world and I believe that with the right partnerships, we can have an even greater impact in the years to come.
